Re my 12/4 question...I was really trying to find out how the generator retarding feature interacts with the mechanical brakes. I guess the answer is that when costing, with the engine shuts off, that the brake pedal never influences (increases) the generating capacity as it is already taking place at it's maximum. Right? Thanks, I know not why I like to know such things.
The hydraulic braking system kicks in aroung 7MPH or during emergency braking situations.

What is the actual winter mileage for a Prius? I have a 2008 - purchased in Sept4mber and the mileage was running 52-53 fro all kindso of driving. But come winter in Chicago is is around 36 mpg in town. That seems like an swfully big drop.
It is normal for gas mileage to drop 20% in the winter due to the winter formula refineries produce for the northern states. On really cold days the batteries are not as effective. Try putting your fan speed on low once the cabin is comfortable. This can help.

I know it's best to brake early and softly with any car...but is that a distinct advantage with the Prius because the actual mechanical brakes do not activate until the braking effect of the battery charging system is exceeded?
Braking early with the Prius is still advantageous because you can potentially time lights so you don’t have to start from zero. Also, the gas engine is off whenever you are braking..

I recently purchased a 2008 Prius, and am very happy with it so far. I am, however, interested in the news of the plug-in option for the 2009's. Will there be the possibility for a retrofit of the plug-in capability for early models?
The plug-in Prius is currently being tested in California and Japan. The newly designed 2009 Prius will not initially be a plug-in. No specific date has been released for the plug-in version.
